THE MAJOR BERNEX PROJECT – TOWARDS A GREEN AND VIBRANT CITY

13 février 2026

The Grand Bernex Project is one of the major urban development initiatives in the canton of Geneva. It aims to transform the outskirts of Bernex into a sustainable urban hub, better connected to public transport, capable of accommodating new residents, jobs, and local amenities, while preserving quality of life.

By 2030, the first phase plans to create approximately 1,600 housing units and 1,600 jobs in Bernex, as well as 200 housing units in Confignon. In the longer term, the project’s overall potential could reach nearly 5,700 housing units and an equal number of jobs, making the area a major regional hub. The development is structured around several complementary sectors (Bernex-East, Vailly, and Vuillonnex), combining residential areas, economic activities, public facilities, and green spaces.

Mobility is a central pillar of the project: the extension of the tramway to Bernex-Vailly, the creation of urban boulevards, continuous pedestrian and cycling paths, and park-and-ride facilities aim to reduce car dependency and promote sustainable travel. The development of high-quality public spaces is intended to strengthen neighborhood life and the attractiveness of the area.

The project also follows a strong environmental approach, including the enhancement of the Molliers agro-urban park, which integrates agricultural production, biodiversity, and recreational uses. Several key steps are scheduled over the coming years: construction permits for new infrastructure, gradual development of neighborhoods, arrival of companies such as Caran d’Ache in the business zone, and commissioning of public facilities.

In summary, the Grand Bernex Project aims to balance urban growth, ecological transition, and quality of life, creating a lively, mixed-use neighborhood well connected to the rest of Geneva.
